Eleven (11) Door County's Vietnam Vets died during the Vietnam war: Five (* ) were killed in action (KIA) or died due to their wounds. * Dan L. Pfister was Door County's first to be killed in action on June 18, 1968, * Randall W. Wagner was the second, killed November 27, 1968, * David R. Schaefer was the third killed May 1, 1969, *Private First Class Richard E. Perez was the fourth killed in action on September 6, 1969, and * Philip M. Overbeck was the fifth and last killed in action June 10, 1970.

Six Door County Veterans died during the Vietnam War:

December 30, 1964: Pfc. John T. Husby died at Fort Ord California due to "poisonous effects on his system.

March 5, 1965: Ronald Schley died in an auto accident while stationed in Zweirbrucken, Germany;

November 22, 1967: Specialist 5 Gary A. Leimbach died in an auto accident near Tacoma, Washington shortly after returning from a seven day furlough in Door County. He'd just returned from active duty in South Vietnam;

January 12, 1970: Petty Officer William C. Johnson died at Oak Harbor, Washington (no cause of death listed);

September 5, 1971: Pfc. Edward R. Bieri drowned while on military leave at Hendersonville, Tennessee;

August 7, 1972: Spec 4 David C. Barnard died at Fort Knox, Kentucky while serving as aide to Commanding General Major General William R. Desobry.

Dan L. Pfister

Door County's first casualty in Vietnam was Sergeant First Class Dan L. Pfister, 33, of Sturgeon Bay.

Dan, son of Casper and Ethel Pfister, husband of Jacquline (Benson), father of Pamela Jean, Seven Dan, and Kevin Dean, brother of Harvey, John, Roy, Frank, Alice Kohls, Virginia Krause, Betty Cesar, and twin Doris Krueger. His Mother, Ethel preceded him in death in June 1963.

Davis Mortuary was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Dan L. Pfister 4/17/35 - 6/18/68 is burried in Bayside Cemetery, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.

Randy W. Wagner

Corporal U.S. Army

Egg Harbor, Wisconsin

Door County's second casualty in Vietnam was Corporal Randall W. Wagner, 20, of Egg Harbor.

Randy, son of Ralus and Norma (Bink) Wagner, brother to Ralus Jr., Robert, Rodney, Paula, Patsy, Peggy, and Patty; maternal grandson of Mrs. Joseph (Elizabeth) Bink; and paternal William Wagner. One sister preceded him in death.

Randy was drafeted on April 15, 1968, did Basic & AIT at Fort Campbell, Kentucky and landed in Vietnam September 12, 1968, as a member of the First Batallion, 327th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. He was killed in action by a demolition bomb on November 27, 1968, at Thua Thein, S. Vietnam.

Randy was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, The National Defense medal "highest achievement in hostile territory - the highest order of air discipline."

Randy was a 1967 graduate of Sevastopol High School, on the wrestling team and a member of the Letterman's Club.

Randy receive full military honors at graveside in the Egg Harbor town cemetery.

David R. Schaefer

Door County's third casualty was Sergeant David R. Schaefer, son of Roy and Helen (Rohr) Schaefer, brother of Steve, Rick and Mark, and paternal grandson of Mrs. Nellie Schaefer.

David was a 1966 graduate of Sevastopol High School. He was drafted into the Army and reported for duty on March 17, 1968. After basic training in Kentucky, David shipped out on February 26, and arrived in the Mekong Delta on or about March 1 1969.

David was a member of the Ninth Infantry Division. He was killed in action on May 1, 1969.

Funeral services were held on May 12, 1969 at Davis funeral home and at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, with burial in the parish cemetery, Institute, the Rev. Bernard Geimer officiating.

Richard E. Perez

Philip M. Overbeck

KIA June 10, 1970

Philip M. Overbeck was the fifth and last killed in action June 10, 1970
