So I sez to Bill Becker, "What do you know about
begetting?" I'll be damned if he didn't haul off and kiss me.
No I
sez,
I mean like in
the bible!
Well he sez,
let me tell you what I
know... It all started with
Valentine Herbst!
He's a been our Great, Great, Grandpa... |

So Bill sez, you're
still my favorite cousin... |
|
First, let's review our plans: We'll rent
the "A's" ballpark so we have enough room, toilets
with running water, a proper kitchen, PA, and Shelter if
it rains. We'll get third cousin twice removed Mark
Sawyer to roast the pig and second cousin once
removed Paul Larson to do the salads and our
first wives to fix the deserts. We'll ask
everyone to bring their own beer, soda, paper plates
and plastic utensils and we'll provide ice for
cooling and mixing. Sure, we'll have backups for those
who forget and arrange to sell the ball
clubs' beer and soda at a buck a can if we run
short. That should just about do it! |
Well I sez, "it
sounds good to me too. Now, since we done all the figuring,
I think we'll let Mary and Emily handle the set up,
getting the word out, and cleaning the park when
we're done. Let's you
and me go over to Ruthy's and Richie Weisgerbers and
Mike's Portside Pub, and Woldt's Corners, and
the Bowl and start celebrating our job well
done. Good Idea, than we can go to Lena's and Casey's,
and back to Bleys! |
OK Bill I sez,
What about the begetting? "Well Rich sez Bill, Get me a
beer and I'll begin! First, "Grandma married Grandpa and
had Ma and Pa! No Bill I sez,
we're going to need names. So Bill starts... |

So Bill takes a deep breath and
begins...Let's see, Valentine
Herbst was born on August 16 1830 and he died March 16, 1910. He married
Anne E. somebody? born in 1857. We don't know when she died but we do know they're
dead. With no help from the neighbors, Valentine beget...George Casper Herbst on September 1, 1839,
who died March 9, 1907, Henry
Herbst in 1862 who died in 1941, Elizabeth Herbst on September 30, 1864
who died
September 1, 1901, and our Great Grandpa, Nick Herbst in 1865 who died
January 13, 1916. Those Herbst were and continue to
be a prolific bunch. Especially the ones who live out around
West Jacksonport.
Bill
continues...Now just looking at George who married Kathrina Leimbach and
beget Frederick who married
Louisa Wagner and beget Larry and William who married Verna Haberli and
beget Elvyna who married Gerald Fickel and beget Vicki, Twila and Kent,
you can know were in for a long evening of story telling. Woldt
sez Bill, you'd better get me a beer.
OK Bill sez me, we've already filled up a bleacher even before we add in
Larry son of William who married Connie Calhoun and beget Trent and Amy who married Terry
Driscoll and beget Joseph, than Trent married Candida Ramirez and beget
Kali on June 3, 2002. Than I sez to Bill, Valentine Herbst also beget Lucietta who
married Willard Daniels and beget Danald and Judy who married William
Thoni and beget Carol and Karthie and Karen. "I think Marcella (Bley) Giesseman,
second cousin once removed was right when she said we'll need a hayfield
if they all show up. Unless we plan to rent Miller Park we better stick to
inviting just the good looking ones like the ones on our branch of the
tree. We'll, it's summer and many
won't be able to make it so let's invite them all and when we run out of
food we'll just take their guns away. I think you're right sez
Bill, get me another beer and let's call Decker to see if he can fill in
the details. OK than, I sez, I'll get him on the phone from Pampa, Texas...
Hello
Uncle Deck? We need your help! OK boys, sez Decker, this is how I remember
it... |
 |
Nick Herbst,
the youngest son of Valentine, married Minnie Lautenbach my grandmother.
She was the daughter
of GUSTAVE
"AUGUST"
LAUTENBACH
who was born March 10, 1844 in Oberweidt-Sax Weimer-Eisen,
Germany. He died in 1925
in Jacksonport. Now, Gustave he goes and marries CAROLINE
SCHULTZ
in1868 and beget Minnie, that's my Grandma. Bye-the-way, his wife Caroline was born in September 1847 in Bayaria,
Germany. Nobody is sure when she died. Now Minnie
marries Nick and becomes who we all called Grandma Herbst. Are
you boys still with me? I'm going to get me a beer from the
frig. I'll be right back, he sez.
I'm back!
An
interesting thing is they were married on December 25, 1889. That was Christmas
Day that year. We knew that Bill sez. Well anyway,
Nick, the youngest son of Valentine and Minnie set out to beget Anna, my mother and your
grandma. Anna married Dad and had my sisters Myrtle, Clara, and Betty
and Fritz. Than she divorced Dad and married Frank Hemple.
They lived at 333 West Maple in Sturgeon Bay. They're both buried
in Sturgeon Bay.
Mom died in 1981. Now, Grandpa Nick and Grandma "Minnie" Herbst also
beget uncle Louis (Lutz), Ernest George (born April 16, 1896 - died March 19, 1976), Harold
Herbst, Uncle Paul Herbst,
Aunt Clara Herbst (born in 1891 - died in 1978) and William Herbst
born on January
1, 1893. He died February 8, 1963. They also beget Lydia Caroline Herbst
on July
13, 1902. She died April 22, 1980.

I have a golf game so must run.
You boys fill in your generation. You know about my
sisters Myrtle, Clara, and Betty and brother Fritz. You bet we can
sez Bill and I... |
|

Ernest and Harold are buried in the same cemetery with their Mom
and Dad, Nick and Minnie. Did you boys see the picture of me by
their tomb-stone? You bet sez Bill. Hay Rich; Will you
include Eloise obituary and tell everyone about our
place next to Dad and Fritz? |
|

OK Bill sez, let's crack another jug and see what you remember.
OK
than sez Rich, I'll take over from
here!
Wait a minute! Decker's back on the phone.
He asked us to post
the picture I took of him and Eloise when we planted
a maple
tree at my cottage in memory of Russell his
adopted son. He also said not to forget to post the Obituary for
Aunt Eloise and the interview
he had with Sandra in the summer of 2004. Let's put the
interview on page 4. We all miss
Eloise. We should post what Sandra wrote about her
Indian Heritage. I'll see if I can find it. Let's tell
everyone about where Deck and Eloise will be together in Egg
Harbor next to Grandpa Dick. They can
of that information. |

Hay Billy: My
brother Kevin just called and said his buddy Jay Visti claims
his aunt or grandmother was a Bley so he wants to come to the
reunion. OK sez Bill. Get me another beer and I tell you another
story about begetting....
Well about the second jug we figured
Frederick and Lucietta Valentine also beget John and Louis and Edward
and Carl and Richard who alone lead us into a list of Zephirins and
Broetzmans and Crains and Jorsch and Vaness. So we
popped the cork on another jug and decided to start over with
Valentine's Daughter Anna Herbst born June 11, 1887 (died October 21,
1905) and sort out who we might invite. But than we figured we had the
wrong Anna as she married August Leimbach and neither of us looked much
like a Leimbach. So we looked at Valantine's son John and Louis and
found that Louis (Beans) Herbst and Ella Muehlbach beget Elva Bertha
Herbst who married Sabastian (Bud) Killa and Elva's sister Irene Clara
marred Harry Edwards and her brother Edward Harry John Herbst married
Patricia Patterson and beget Linda who married Richard Harding and beget
Andrew, Alexander and Robin cousins to Lisa and Laurie. Well, when we
went back to Anna's brothers Edward, Carl, and Richard we saw that
Richard married Ella Lobrey and beget June Herbst who married ebie
Zephirin and beget Terry who married John Boldt and Deborah who married
Kaker and Steven who married Jance Linnox and Roberta who married Wayne
Broetzman who beget Erin and Zeph whold Bradly Zephirin married Anita
Crain and beget Samantha while Janet Herbst married both Jorsch and
Vaness.
Now it was about 4 a.m. so we called Roy "Decker" Woldt in
Pampa Texas to get his opinion. He hung up so I'm glad he didn't know
who was calling. Going back to work, we
decided to look at Valentine's son Otto (Bones) Herbst.Well now we
were getting somewhere because Otto married Norma Hasenjager and beget
Myron who married Joann Bruckner and Eunice who married August Bley's son Gordon Edward in 1953. Now Gordon Edward, son of August and Lydia Caroline Herbst
who married Eunice daughter of Bones and Norma beget Lisa Bley
who married Robert Bieri and beget Michael and Jason who married Sara Ewaskowitz. Oh yes, Eunice and Gordon also beget Philip Bley who married
Mary Sawyer (daughter of Robert Sawyer and Jean Herbst) and beget Kelly, Sadie, Annie, Andrew and Lucy, while Bradly born
in '67 married Lisa Ann Brauer and
beget Aaron, Taylor and Max, while Lisa Bley married Robert Bieri and
beget Michael, Jason, and Lindsay. Now Sharon born in '41 married Eugene
Kessen and beget Brenda, Laure, Jeff, Terrie. Brenda married Dan Leist
and beget Chelsea, Dane, and Marli, while Laurie married Jeff Shartner
and beget Calle, Erin, and Alec and Terrie married Steve Haen and beget
Casey, Lucas, and Logan.
Now Henry Herbst (son of Valentine and Anne E. for those
of you who are confused) married Elizabeth Anschutz and beget Rose and
Emma Herbst who married Frank Garske and beget Joyce, Frank, and
Clarence who married June Murphy and beget Robert and Larry. Emil
Herbst, son of Henry and Elizabeth married Nellie Vonholten and beget
Helen and Warren who married Bess. Elmer Herbst married Ann Urdal and
beget Ralph. Lester Herbst married Florence Bishop and beget Mildred in
May of '27 who married Rober E. Leist in 1950 and beget David, Barbara,
Cheryl, Daniel, Randy, and Sandra. Now, I don't know much about Martha
and Edna daughters of Henry and Elizabeth but I do know that Elsie
Herbst born in 1884 married Joseph Micholas Rehr and beget Helen who
married George Gerdman and beget Don, Glen, Patsy, and Mary Jane. Patsy
married Neil Anders and beget Barbara, Christine, John, Debra and
Thomas. Barbara married Larry Cain and beget Shawn, Christine married
Richard Voghlander and beget Michael and Robert, Debra married Eric
Kordon and beget Samuel and Jacob, while Tomas married Ginger Rass and
beget Karlie and Mary Jane married John Olsen. Now Irene Rehr married
Herbert Pleck and beget Sheri while Myrtle Rehr married Leon Collins and
beget Bill and Ross Rehr married Jeanette Macmillin and beget Rebecca
who marriede Steve Meyer and beget Eric and Justin while Vickie rehr
married Terry Havel and beget nicholas and Nathan. Frank Herbst born
August 1, 1889 died on June 4, 1960.
